Author-in-Residence Program
One or two weeks
I will create a tailor-made program for your students that will support your curriculum by focusing on specific units of study, DEI initiatives, or any other grade-level or school-wide objectives. In addition, with more than a decade of experience as an instructional coach, I can partner with teachers to discuss best practices and collaborate on classroom instruction. The author-in-residence program may also include events outside of the school day, such as attending your school's book fair or facilitating a writing workshop or book club for your families.
1. Reading and Responding for Grades Pre-K – 1
20 – 30 minutes
- Read two of my books.
- Engage children in responding and sharing.
2. Writing Process for Grades 2 – 8
45 – 60 minutes
OPTION 1* – Author Interview (Ideal within an Author Study unit)
- Students will have the opportunity to ask questions they’ve prepared in advance because they’ve perused my website (which I recommended for this age group). These questions may be about my book, my writing process, and/or my journey to publication.
- Students may also choose to share what they’re working on in their writing life and ask questions related to their own writing and/or process.
- I share my path to publication (what inspired me, how I get ideas for my books, how long it takes for a book to be published, etc.).
- Students ask questions.
- Generating Ideas
- Revising
- Writing Autobiographical Poems
3. Personalized Writers' Workshop for Grades 2 – 8
45 – 60 minutes
- This is a unique opportunity to create something just for your students!
- Tell me what unit you’ll be in during my visit, and I’ll plan an appropriate lesson.
- I will need to communicate with the teacher(s) in advance to make sure the lesson is targeted to your students’ needs.
